Byrne Campaign Signs Ignore Law
2008-10-05
Pasadena NL (October 5, 2008) - It would appear that another uncontrollable group of Liberal incumbent Gerry Byrne's 50,000 supporters are ignoring corporate and provincial laws as they pertain to election signs. In a recent swing through the Humber - St. Barbe - Baie Verte riding, NL First candidate, Wayne Bennett, has observed Liberal campaign signs attached to hydro poles, guard rails, highway signs throughout the entire Northern Peninsula, as well as Green Bay South. In the South Brook portion of the riding, bright red Liberal signs are even attached to a School Playground Warning Sign.
Now it is well know that Mr. Byrne has told Madame Pender that he cannot control his people. Any candidate, and especially a former cabinet minister, fully knows that he or she is ultimately responsible for the actions of their staff and workers.
In addition, a veteran politician should be fully cognizant of the rules with respect to the placement of election signs to hydro poles, highway infrastructure and city right of ways. As well, when that career politician sees clear violations, they should take swift and appropriate action to have the situation rectified.
I guess this does not hold true for Mr. Byrne. When he was in Green Bay South last week he had to drive by the offending signs, as I did last Sunday, the 28th of September. Surely he should have instructed his over zealous campaign workers to have the signs removed before my return to the South Brook area this past Saturday.
In a recent interview with The Western Star, Mr Byrne was quick to highlight that he had his signs up two minutes after the dropping of the writ. I only wish that he could be that quick is removing his signs that clearly are in violation of the law (s).
